Take a Breath

Marc sat in his personal quarters, going over the duty roster that Major DeVries had given him, but his mind kept going back to Lieutenant Lischka. She had told him to 'take a breath' and he had to admit that he was a tad overly enthusiastic about his introduction. Perhaps he should have waited until more questions was asked of him and his specific qualifications; after all, he was only an Ensign. He looked at the single pip on his shoulder and tried to visualize the second indented pip that would indicate a rise in rank.

"Lieutenant JG Marcus Shenk," he said, trying the title out. He sighed because he knew that he would have to earn that rank, but he was determined to do whatever it took to attain that rank.

Grabbing a PaDD, he looked up the other member of Security that he had met - Lieutenant Lischka. This was her fourth ship that she had served on and the second where she served as the Assistant Chief of Security. Five years of dedicated service to StarFleet without a blemish on her public record. His mind wandered off again as he thought about the 'other activities' that Major DeVries had hinted at about the attractive woman; it conjured up images of her running through a meadow without a stitch of clothing on and the song Take My Breath Away playing.

He shook his head to clear it of the visualization - it would only get him in trouble which he did not need or want - and took up the PaDD once more and began investigating the Gavarian Corridor that the Arizona was heading into. It was sixty light years across and four hundred light years long, and it had been long disputed between the Cardassians and the Romulans until the onset of the Dominion War. Ships were coming up missing and barely a word from the crews before all transmission was cut.

Making a list, he wrote the names of the ships and what cargoes they were carrying, the dates they left their three stops before entering the Gavarian Corridor. Getting that information from the computer, he began to cross-correlate the data in his head while pacing back and forth in his small, shared quarters.

"Who is doing this? Why are they doing it? Is it a power play between the Cardassians and the Romulans? Is it an outside party attempting to instigate a full-scale war between the two races? Who would stand to benefit from this the most? Was it just a matter of stealing supplies in order to survive in the Gavarian Frontier?" He mused all these questions out loud while making more notes on his PaDD. He wanted to get a head start on the investigation, as he saw it in his mind.

He checked with the computer and saw that there was currently no one in the Intelligence Department, but he wanted to meet up with the Captain first and make himself known. He made another note to also meet with Lieutenant Goodman and Petty Officer Ruiz. Saving his notes, he sat down on his bunk and tried to get a little shut-eye before having to meet with the Captain.
