The Mysterious Mr. Lynch

Posted on Sun Mar 6th, 2011 @ 8:52pm by Captain Nathan Cowell MD & Lieutenant Colonel Anastasia DeVries

Mission: Shore Leave 1: Pacifica
Location: Cafe Zephyr, Western Sea, Pacifica
Timeline: Shortly after 'Impromptu Meeting'

Captain Nathan Cowell was enjoying a nice breakfast meal in the small cafe just outside the resort hotel he was staying in on the surface. He'd decided that if he was going to take some time off, he was going to do it all the way, that included not setting foot on his boat if he didn't have to. The meeting with Lt. Goodman had been interesting, she seemed eager to please even if she was a bit on the stuffy side. A project for another day, however, since he had bacon and eggs to contend with. The fact that he was suddenly not as alone as he had been a few moments ago was not as unsettling as the company that had decided to pay him a visit.

Nathan cast a shielded eye over to the stranger, a very clean cut, sharply dressed individual. The kind of person Nathan pretty much knew was up to nothing good whatsoever. The fact that the man just sat there and watched Nathan eat was particularly disturbing. So much so, Nathan just had to make mention of it.

"You know, normally when you sit down at a man's table, you say something. And you don't watch me eat my eggs and toast like you're watching the birth of a new star or something, because I'm not that spectacular... not these days anyway," Nathan addressed the man.

The man chuckled lightly at the older man's antics. "I suppose we should cut right to the chase then. You may call me Lynch. I'm with the section."

"Which section? The underwear section? The nudie mag section? What are we talking about here?" Nathan asked, as if oblivious to what the man was saying, "But you know, I met a Lynch once, years ago... I mean years ago... Kinda looked like you, wormy little motherfucker... Didn't work for any sections though, worked for the CIA back in the USA... I'm sure that doesn't mean much to a kid like you... Anyway, what chase are we cutting off at the pass? God I haven't said that in years either..."

Lynch straightened up a bit before leaning over the man's LSD laced eggs. "Cute... especially the part about the nudes... but even though you're old... I'm also aware you're not dumb. You know exactly what I'm talking about. I'm here to gather information. In other words I'm spying on your crew."

"Which crew? Anyone I should be aware of? Am I in danger? Will I get fired? I hope I don't get fired... I like my job..." Nathan rambled on, looking to see where this Lynch character was going with all this.

"Are you aware Major DeVries accessed top secret files from your vessel shortly before you arriving at Pacifica? I would have thought a man of your experience would have some sort of protocol to alert you to such things," Lynch continued purposefully ignoring the Captain's nonsense.

Nathan sighed, this man was obviously not going to give him anything other than 'the facts'. And if that was how it had to be played...

"Yes, and I also know that it was her own personnel file that she looked into. Unless I'm missing something, it wasn't illegal to look at your own file. Hell, I'm sure more than one red flag would fly if I popped open my own record in its entirety. What does a trip down memory lane have to do with the price of tea in China?" Nathan gave the Lynch person a weary glare through dark sunglasses, rendering the gesture pointless.

Lynch considered his position carefully. He was under strict orders to keep all his eggs in one basket... however... he knew once the Arizona departed from the planet his opportunity to get dirt would be greatly diminished. Even with all their tricks at his fingertips. Perhaps it was a risk he had to take. "We suspect the Major may be involved in some classified section business. The sort of business that could jeopardize your crew... if you follow my drift."

Nathan laid his fork down on his fork down on the plate in front of him and leaned back, "Jeopardize how? Don't start saying stupid shit like that without laying it out on the table. Are we talking injuries, deaths, what? I hardly believe that coming from that one, jacked up as her past is. Doesn't strike me as the 'fuck everyone around her' kind of person. But I'm sure, now that I've said that, you'll play the contradictor and say she is like that and so on and so forth..."

"No one ever completely leaves the section Captain... we both know that," Lynch explained. "Yet, the Major has developed a rather impressive network of associates who she uses like chess pieces when the need arises. One of those pieces have flown the proverbial coop. We believe she may know something."

"Uh huh... And what? You want me to go up to her and ask her where this 'chess piece' is? Or are you just giving me the heads up?" Nathan asked skeptically.

Lynch shrugged. "We'll continue to watch her as long as we can... what you do is your own business. However, keep in mind the section does what the section needs to do. At any cost. I apologize that I can not be any more upfront than that."

"Bullshit," Nathan said bluntly, "But I warn you, don't fuck with my people if you're not 100% sure. I've pulled spines out of people's asses for 99% and less..."

Lynch shrugged again, "We'll do what we have to, just as quickly as you'll do what you have to. I just thought I'd give you the benefit of forewarning, Captain. Now if you'll excuse me..."

"Yes, go back to the ether where you were spawned from, I have relaxing to do," Nathan quipped, returning to his half eaten meal.
