Is there a Doctor in the house?

Posted on Fri May 20th, 2011 @ 6:12am by Lieutenant Serran

Mission: Shore Leave 2; Picking Up the Pieces
Location: Medical
Timeline: After "Building a Foundation"

Lieutenant Junior Grade Kar'G stepped off the transporter pad after beaming aboard from the Casey. He was one of the last people to be sent over from the Casey and he had to wonder how the new CMO ran the ship. The Arizona had taken heavy losses during the fight with the Romulans and heavy casualties as well, and Kar'G wanted to see what the success rate of this Medical team was.

Getting into a turbolift, Kar'G ordered it to take him straight to Medical on Deck 6, not even bothering to check into his new quarters. He looked around for a Vulcan that he was told would be in charge of him. While he didn't dislike Vulcans, he found them very stuffy and unwilling to bend the rules even a little to do what was needed. Asking a Ensign nurse, he was directed to the Medical Labs where he was told Lieutenant Serran would be.

Serran had taken some time, with a recent and welcomed lull in sickbay, to work on some administrative tasks that needed attention. The transition from being recently appointed to CMO was progressing slowly but Serran was expecting to complete the process in as timely a manner as possible. Dr. Valdor was also helping to make things transition as smoothly as possible by having shown the vulcan how she had had everything set up for herself. So now Serran was in the process of streamlining as much as he could without making any major changes at this early stage.

One of the changes, however, that the vulcan did need to address was the arrival of the Arizona's new surgeon, Lieutenant(jg) Kar'G. The Klingon had hitched a ride with the USS Casey somehow and was to be posted with the Arizona's medical team. In fact, just as Serran was about to call up a file on Kar'G, the Klingon was just entering sickbay. A nurse pointed out Serran's office and the Klingon made his way over. Serran stood, activating the door to his office, to allow the Klingon to enter.

Lieutenant JG Kar'G straightened his unform as the door slid open to the CMO's office and stepped forward. He looked at the Vulcan and compared it to the image on the PADD that he had in his hand. "Greetings. I am Lieutenant Junior Grade Kar'G. Are you Lieutenant Serran?"

"I am," Serran confirmed. "Do you have your transfer orders with you?" The vulcan indicated for the klingon to take the empty seat opposite his desk, then sat himself.

The Klingon surgeon looked at Serran for a long moment before handing a PADD over to him. "Orders from Commodore Pike to transfer me to the Arizona, Lieutenant. My medical training and history is also included, and all of my most recent surgeries."

The new CMO accepted the surgeon's documents and inputted them into the Arizona's systems. Kar'G, by the looks of things, had only recently committed to a surgical specialty but he did have extended medical experience. It could only be of benefit to the Arizona's medical staff.

"Why did you choose surgery as your specialty, Doctor Kar'G. I am...curious," Serran asked.

"I was tired of watching precious experience die in favor of training a new generation of warriors," Kar'G answered gruffly. "Soon, there would have been no one to train the young if they kept allowing the old and experienced to die. My skills as a surgeon allow me to save that experience so it may be passed on, not wasted. The Arizona recently lost many men and women, my Commodore told me, including your XO. That is experience that cannot be replaced. I vow that I will save as many lives as possible using any means possible."

"Your conviction will be a positive asset to our medical team," Serran stated, coming as close to a compliment as most vulcans would allow. "I will place you on a work schedule as soon as we are finished here and will forward the information to you. I should alert you that there will be an upcoming surgery that I will require your assistance in. Once I have finished with some of the particulars with my patient, I will inform you of everything. Have you any questions for me?"

Lieutenant JG Kar'G thought for a moment. "What level of triage do you perform here on the Arizona? I have seen everything ranging from ignoring all but the most serious wounded, to treating those who can still perform on their feet first on other vessels."

"As I have just taken the chief medical officer position, I will be reviewing all current medical procedures for this vessel to see if there are any deficiencies that need to be addressed," Serran began. "That being the case, however, I can assure you that in regards to triage, the most serious cases - as evaluated - will be treated first but any and all patients shall be examined and cared for, regardless of the severity of their ailments."

It was about as basic an answer as Serran could give, considering his predilection towards Starfleet Medical protocols. The vulcan was quite satisfied that the regulations put in place were more than adequate in properly dealing with medical issues. Any steps taken beyond the guidelines as laid out could lead to deleterious consequences, though Serran knew that there existed the possibility that certain decisions required certain actions for which he might be forced to make. A task the vulcan felt he was more than capable of performing should the need ever arise.

Kar'G nodded. "Very well, Lieutenant Serran. I will put my personal belongings in my quarters, then report back here for duty. Thank you. I will not disappoint you." With that, he waited to be dismissed, planning ahead on updating the Lieutenant on any Medical procedures that he had found was more effective based on his experience on other vessels.
